Because when I post about my past experiences, past situations and what I've learned, it usually is relatable to lots of people, so it's good for my audience, good to bring more people in. It's usually shareable. People want to tag people in it and let their friends know hey, there's this great piece of content. I don't want my work to be stuck behind an academic paywall. I want to leave a legacy, I want to reach my potential and I want to change lives. This podcast, power your Research, is my attempt to help the smartest people in the world do that very thing. My hope is that you use the lessons I share to make more money than what your higher ed job can ever pay you. I've done it, my clients have done it, and so can you. My hope is that you'll apply what you learn here and one day join the Power your Research program where you can work with me one-on-one. Today I'm talking about social media strategy, specifically when it comes to posting videos. So on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, videos are very important. If you're on those platforms and trying to use them to build, you have to be posting videos. I, I get it, I understand it. I used to be there. That used to be me, but building my brand and reaching my goals and reaching my dreams is more important than being uncomfortable. And the beautiful thing is that after you do it for a while and you practice and you figure out what works, it becomes a lot easier. So I'm going to share three things with you to help you think through the types of videos that you can post, so that you can get consistent with it and, hopefully, a little more comfortable. I think yesterday or a couple of days ago, I gave a quick reminder of why you're posting on social media in the first place. So it's brand awareness, brand trust, brand customer that's how I remember them. Brand awareness You're posting content to bring people into your network, so that you can become known to people. Brand trust You're building a deeper connection with your audience so that they can trust you and so that you can have credibility. And then brand customer is you're making sales. So you're posting so that you can sell something to someone. Before you post, you should make sure what you're posting fits into one of those things. Is there a reason that you need to be posting a picture of you on a yacht? Does it fit into one of those three things, right. So, in terms of thinking about the videos that I am posting, that work for my brand, I generally get inspiration from three things and I make them fit into those three categories that I just described to you. One I'm posting about a past experience or situation and I'm telling you what I learned from it. So this could be a past experience that was good or bad, but I'm telling you either what I learned from it or what I did that I think might help you. That's great for brand awareness, because when I post about my past experiences, past situations and what I've learned, it usually is relatable to lots of people. So it's good for my audience, good to bring more people in. It's usually shareable. People want to tag people in it and let their friends know hey, there's this great piece of content. The second thing I'm drawing inspiration from is I'm literally talking to myself.
Speaker 1:A lot of the videos that I post are just me reminding myself of the things that I already know. So I'm literally posting videos that are inspirational to me, that are mindset things that I know are good, and I'm literally talking to myself hey, everyone, real quick. I don't run any ads on this podcast, so I have to rely on word of mouth. If this podcast has helped you in any way, please share it with a friend and follow me, dr Sheena Howard, on LinkedIn, where I give more free content on building your brand as an academic. If you tell me you came to my LinkedIn from the podcast, I'll make sure I accept your request. Linkedin from the podcast I'll make sure I accept your request. In those types of videos, ones that are doing really well or that I know that are going to do very well, you can bake call to actions into your caption so you could say hey, you know, if you like this piece of content, I drew inspiration from this book I wrote. Here's the link to the book I wrote. So fits into the category of trying to make sales. And again, these call to actions could be leading people to your coaching program, your book, or whatever it is that you want to sell your, your, your speaking engagement booking site, or whatever it is.
Speaker 1:The third thing that I draw inspiration from in terms of the videos that I post, particularly on TikTok and Instagram, is I see I'm talking to other people that annoy me. Okay, so I see lots of things on the internet that I think that just annoy me, that get under my skin, that, quite frankly, trigger me, and so my videos are in response to something or someone that I saw on social media say something that I either completely disagree with, think is harmful to people, is misinformation or something like that. And so sharing with people my perspective, without calling out the person that I'm actually talking about. So sharing with people my perspective so that it can help them reach their own goals and again, a learning point in there, and in all these things I can put a call to action for you to go to the link in my bio and make an offer on my comic book that I signed and those types of things. Hey, you want a coaching call? Here's the link to my coaching call.
Speaker 1:So those are the three buckets where I grab inspiration from, particularly in terms of posting on TikTok and social media. And the reason why I'm even making this is because I was just on a coaching session with one of my clients and she was asking me how do you come up with the content for the videos? And I know for a fact, like every academic that has come through my Power, your Research program is hesitant to start posting videos, and so you can probably get over the hump. One by doing it that's the only way you can get over it, but two by drawing on your past experience, creating videos that is counter to something that maybe you saw, that annoyed you or triggered you, or just reminding yourself of something. So I hope this helps someone out there in terms of getting consistent with their social media content, particularly when it comes to videos. Of course, if you have a question or comment, please leave them down in the comments below. I always try to circle back and answer those questions or connect with you in some way.
