Speaker 1:

A lot of these blogs have millions of niche followers, which is great. Thousands and millions of niche followers. I teach you write the blog post first and then you pitch it to them. Hey, I wrote this for your outlet. Are you interested in it? I don't like to waste time, so I don't like to send an email first and saying, hey, would you be interested in a blog post on this topic. I like to just send it to them. They get to decide, get an answer quicker that way. If the answer is yes, great. If the answer is no, you still have the blog post. You really haven't lost anything. You get to pitch it to another outlet that focuses on the same thing.

The topic of this is how to get five media placements in 30 days, and so I'm going to share three things with you that, if you do these over the next 30 days, you can land five media placements. Now the first one is to create an account with Help A Reporter Out. That's H-A-R-O. It's free for you because you are a source. Journalists are actually looking for you. It's just that all the journalists are on Help A Reporter Out, so you're going to go and create a Help A Reporter Out profile, and then what's going to happen is HARO is going to send you emails like three times a day with all of the journalists all across the country and world that are looking for sources. They are looking for you, and what you're going to do is just spend two hours a week responding to these queries. So it's going to be it's going to be journalists asking for sources for all types of articles. Find the ones that are relevant to you or adjacent to something that you are an expert in, and just reply. Do this for two hours once a week for the next 30 days. You'll get some media placements there. Honestly, you might get five just by doing that. That's how good it is.

Second tip is to pitch yourself to your local NPR station. Now, npr is a high-level media outlet, but NPR is national. Every city has one, so whatever city or place is closest to you that has an NPR affiliate, you want to find a reporter or a segment or a show or a story? Look on their online site, find some topics that are relevant to what you talk about and what you do, and pitch those producers. This is going to take a little bit of research and effort on your part to find out the journalist or the producer who produces the shows. Once you get their email address, pitch them a story.

Speaker 2:

Hey everyone real quick. I don't run any ads on this podcast, so I have to rely on word of mouth. If this podcast has helped you in any way, please share it with a friend and follow me, dr Sheena Howard, on LinkedIn, where I give more free content on building your brand as an academic. If you tell me you came to my LinkedIn from the podcast, I'll make sure I accept your request.

Speaker 1:

Now there's a whole technique and method that you need to use to pitch properly. But for right now, if you just do that and let's say you just spend 30 minutes a week on this finding the email addresses and pitching them your story, make sure it's relevant to something they've talked about in the past or relevant to the show's topic, you will get responses. And please remember to follow up. Don't just send one email and then be like oh, they didn't respond. You don't want to do that. The third tip is for you to get five media placements in the next 30 days. The third tip is to write in a thousand word blog post about whatever you care about, whatever your area of expertise is in. You're going to write that a thousand word blog post, pitch it to an outlet that cares about that thing. Okay, so you could pitch something to the Chronicle of Higher Education. You can pitch something. If you're into climate change, pitch it to a blog that focuses on climate change. This could be smaller outlets, bigger outlets. A lot of these blogs have millions of niche followers, which is great. Thousands and millions of niche followers.

Speaker 1:

I teach you write the blog post first and then you pitch it to them. Hey, I wrote this for your outlet. Are you interested in it? I don't like to waste time, so I don't like to send an email first and saying, hey, would you be interested in a blog post on this topic? I like to just send it to them. They get to decide. Get an answer quicker that way. If the answer is yes, great. If the answer is no, you still have the blog post. You really haven't lost anything. You get to pitch it to another outlet that focuses on the same thing. So that's how to get five media placements in 30 days. You do those three things. I know that you will have success and please circle back and let me know all of the media coverage you're getting after you actually execute the things that I just taught you. Again, if you're new here, my name is Dr Sheena Howard. I am the founder of Power, your Research, you.
